These are the?highlights from June 2025. We plan to publish such findings regularly in the future.

Content Management Systems

WordPress is the unchallenged leader among content management systems. It is, however, no longer growing, and powering around 43% of all websites in the last years. Behind WordPress, we see a rise of hosted systems. Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow have all seen impressive growth rates in the last years, and a bit further down also Tilda and Duda.?Joomla and Drupal, two open source tools that ranked 2nd and 3rd in the years before 2020, are now declining.

We don't show WordPress in that chart, because it really is in a league of its own.

Server-side Languages

PHP is clearly dominating here, although, it is very slowly declining from around 80% of all websites to 74%. A major factor contributing to that dominance is, of course, content management systems. All of the leading open source CMSs are written in PHP after all. Interestingly, none of the leading hosted systems are PHP-based, which is a reason for its decline. ASP.NET was ranked second only one year ago, but is now behind Ruby and Java. JavaScript and Scala are also growing fast from a somewhat lower level.

Again, we left out PHP in the chart to focus on the changes below it.

JavaScript Libraries

jQuery remains the clear leader in the JavaScript library category, although also slowly declining.?It's the PHP of JavaScript libraries. The fastest growing system here is React, and behind that Lodash. Both of these systems are used by Wix, which contributes significantly to their growth.

CSS Frameworks

Bootstrap?remains the clear leader in the CSS framework category, although also slowly declining.?It's the?jQuery?of?CSS frameworks.?Animate occupies a strong second rank.?The fastest growing systems are Foundation and Tailwind at the moment.

Web Servers

Apache had a solid market share of 65% more than 10 years ago, but is down to 26% now. Nginx is stable at rank 1 with 34%.?Cloudflare Server, originally forked from Nginx, is rising, and so is LiteSpeed and Node.js. Microsoft-IIS is declining together with ASP.NET as we mentioned above.

Web Hosting Providers

Amazon is the leading web hosting provider, but it's amazing how close Shopify already is at rank 2. Hostinger was the fastest growing provider in the last 3 years, just ahead of Wix. Godaddy Group, once the leading hosting provider, is down to less than half of its peak market share.

Data Center Providers

We carefully distinguish between web hosting providers and data center providers. Many hosting providers don't run their own data centers, but rent server space from one of the cloud services. For example, SiteGround, one of the most popular hosting providers, uses the Google Cloud, and so these websites count for SiteGround as hosting provider, but for Google as data center provider.

Amazon AWS and Google Cloud are the biggest player in this category, and their market shares keep increasing. It is remarkable that Microsoft Azure, often regarded as one of the "big three" cloud providers is not particularly strong when it comes to serving websites, with significantly lower market share than Amazon and Google.

Reverse Proxy Services Providers

Cloudflare dominates our revers proxy category, which includes services such as CDNs and DDoS protection. Just under 20% of all websites rely on Cloudflare, whereas their closest competitors Amazon CloudFront, Fastly and Akamai are clearly behind,?each?serving around 1% of all websites and without spectacular changes recently.

DNS Server Providers

Cloudflare is also dominating the DNS server providers, as many of their CDN customers also switch to their DNS services. The closest competitors here are providers that are also strong as domain name registrars, particularly the Godaddy Group and?Newfold Digital Group (formerly?Endurance).

Email Servers Providers

Google and Microsoft together serve 30% of the corporate email server market, with Google leading, but the gap is closing in the last years. While Microsoft is much stronger here as a corporate cloud service provider than in the data center category, as mentioned above, it's the other way around with Amazon, having a much lower share of the email market.

Traffic Analysis Tools

Google Analytics is the clear number 1 in this category, used by 47% of all websites. This is down from over 50% in previous years. There is a large variety of different types of providers in this category. There are services that are similar in nature to Google Analytics, for example?Yandex.Metrica and?Hotjar. Then we have open source tools with the option of self-hosting such as?Matomo and?Snowplow, and then we have tools that primarily measure the impact of online advertising, such as?Meta Pixel and?LinkedIn Insight Tag. The fastest growing providers at the moment are?Snowplow and?Cloudflare Web Analytics.

Advertising Networks

Online advertising is another category where Google totally dominates the market, again with a slight decline recently. We have once more Amazon and Microsoft as competitors, but far, far behind.?Equativ (formerly Smart AdServer) is actually a strong independent provider in this much contested market at rank 3.

Social Widgets

Social widgets are widgets, or even simple links, that enable website visitors to share content on social media. WhatsApp has taken the lead here from Facebook and Twitter/X in the last year. The social bookmarking services such as AddToAny are less popular now than they used to be.

There are significant regional differences.?WhatsApp is most popular in large parts of Asia and South America, Facebook on most of Europe, Canada and Australia, and Twitter/X in USA, UK and Japan.
